Swarms

A swarm of bees in May is worth a load of hay,
A swarm of bees in June is worth a silver spoon,
But a swarm of bees in July is not worth a fly!

A traditional saying.

A Swarm of bees can look and sound very frightening!
However when treated carefully  and with understanding it is fascinating and completely natural phenomenon.

To cut a long and rather complicated story short, the bees are moving home ! The old queen and about half her family are  looking for a new place to live.  Till they find somewhere suitable, they will hang  in a great cluster on almost any convenient surface.  Well convenient for them, not always for the people involved but it is usually only a temporary measure. The scout bees will usually find a cavity in a few hours and the whole cluster will move off almost as one.

Few other insects in this country swarm on such a scale,  so if you see a huge mass of insects they are likely to be honey bees!

If you have a swarm arrive in your garden please do let us know and we will do our best to collect it  for you or find someone who can

While we don't make a charge we do ask for a contribution to our expenses.
